In your English classes you can speak. In the mirror, talking to yourself, you’re fine.

So, why is that when you have a meeting at work or a job interview you want the floor to swallow you up?

Here are the 5 main reasons why:

1. You believe that you cannot make a mistake.

You tell yourself that classes are for making mistakes; at work you must speak perfectly. This is unrealistic!

The only way to truly learn is to make mistakes in real situations.

You will rarely speak perfectly, as you are not native. And even natives make mistakes!

The nature of oral communication is that we make mistakes sometimes.

Being afraid of making mistakes is paralysing you and stopping you from doing your job properly.

2. You are more worried about defending yourself than communication.

I find the expression “me defiendo en inglés” absurd, as communication is about connection NOT about protection.

When you are more concerned about your image than the conversation, you are blocking the possibility to communicate successfully with the other person or people.

3. You think that everyone is analysing your level.

When you answer or ask a question, you think that everyone is mentally rating your English level.

If someone is doing that instead of listening to you, then they are not doing their job properly…

4. You tell yourself that this is REALLY important.

If you read about what people say is important on their deathbeds, it is never a meeting or a job interview….

Believing that it is REALLY important doesn’t allow you to speak freely.

5. You don’t really listen and you don’t really speak.

You don’t really use your communication skills at work – which is where you need to do use them to improve. Series, films and private one-to-one classes help, but it is not the same. And you know it.

At the meetings you are worrying about your English and your image, so you don’t truly listen. You also avoid speaking where possible.

There IS a way to break with all of this, and exponentially improve your English speaking rapidly.

Do you dare to discover it?

I’ll tell you about it tomorrow.

¿Te atreves a descubrirlo?

Mañana te cuento cómo.
